📱 Beware of PAC Code Scams: Protect Your Mobile Number!

phone scam

Have you ever suddenly lost signal on your phone and thought, “That’s odd”? 🤔
It might not just be a network issue it could be a SIM swap scam. And yes, it’s happening more and more across the UK.

Let’s break it down simply 👇

🚨 What’s a PAC Code Scam?

A PAC code is something you use when switching mobile networks to keep your phone number. But scammers have figured out how to steal your number by pretending to be you and requesting a PAC code from your provider.

Once they have control of your number, they can:

  • Receive your texts and calls including MFA requests
  • Get your banking login codes
  • Reset your email and social media passwords
  • Even steal money from your accounts 😱

🕵️‍♂️ How Do They Do It?

  1. They collect your personal info (from social media, phishing emails, or data leaks).
  2. They contact your mobile provider pretending to be you.
  3. They request a PAC code or SIM replacement.
  4. Your number gets transferred to their SIM.
  5. They take over your accounts using text-based security codes.

⚠️ Signs You Might Be a Victim

  • Your phone suddenly loses signal 📶
  • You get messages about a SIM change or PAC code you didn’t request
  • You can’t log into your accounts
  • You notice strange activity on your bank or email

🛡️ How to Stay Safe

✅ Set a PIN or password with your mobile provider
✅ Use app-based authentication (like Google Authenticator) instead of SMS codes
✅ Be careful what you share online
✅ Keep an eye on your accounts for anything unusual
✅ Use strong, unique passwords (a password manager can help!)
